Issyk-Kul
One of the largest alpine lakes in the world, with beaches on one shore and mountains on the other.

Issyk-Kul is a huge mountain lake in the north-east of the country. Its name is usually translated as warm lake, because it stays unfrozen through the winter.
The north shore has beaches, resort towns and rock carvings at Cholpon-Ata. The south shore is quieter and wilder, with red canyons such as Skazka (Fairytale Canyon) and Jeti-Oguz. It works well for a relaxed trip or as the start of a longer route.
