Karakol
A small town at the east end of Issyk-Kul, and the starting point for mountain valleys and hot springs.

Karakol is a relaxed town with a mix of old wooden buildings, a Russian Orthodox church and a Dungan mosque, reflecting the people who settled here over time.
It is also the gateway to the mountains: valleys such as Altyn Arashan, with hot springs at the end of a rough track, start from here, and many hiking routes begin nearby.
